Bike & Cycle Waitaki
Get on your bike! The Waitaki offers a number of great biking opportunities
Explore rural and coastal Waitaki via a number of suggested cycling routes. With a variety routes, distances, grades, surfaces - not to mention sights and sounds along the way - this is a fantastic way to explore the district.
Here in the reserve you will find a great network of purpose built MTB tracks under a forest canopy. Some tracks are steep (and fast), therefore pushing your bike back up may be required. The tracks are signposted throughout the forest.
Alps 2 Ocean Cycle trail
This renowned cycle journey covers 301km from Aoraki/Mount Cook to the seaside town of Oamaru. One of New Zealand's most scenic cycle trails, the A2O offers some of the most unique and beautiful scenery the country has to offer.
From the base of Aoraki Mt Cook, New Zealand’s tallest mountain, the trail winds down the MacKenzie basin to Lake Ohau pass through Omarama and then into hydro dam lakes and surrounding mountains.
Through the Waitaki Valley passing Otematata, Kurow and Duntroon riders can experience vineyards, rivers, rolling farmland, limestone cliffs and Maori rock art.
Turning off at Duntroon the trail goes past Elephant Rocks and through intense farmland before arriving at the coast and Oamaru.
The trail is a Level 2 ride designed for all abilities and ages. The trail could be done in segments to allow for those who only have a short time, but the true experience will always be from Alps to Ocean.
