Shag Point/ Matakaea Reserve

Shag Point or Matakaea is a great spot for wildlife viewing and is part of an interesting geological coast.

New Zealand fur seals love lounging on the rock platforms around Shag Point. There are a couple of viewing areas to watch the seals and bird life without disturbing them.

The Shag Point area also has quite the history; from Maori history and early moa hunters; to interesting geology and coal mining.

There are designated picnic areas, however, camping is not permitted.

Visit DOC's site for more information.
