Kurow is located in the middle of the Waitaki Valley about 50 minutes from Oamaru on State Highway 83. It is the perfect base for many activities including walking, water-sports, cycling, camping, fishing and even wine tours.
The Waitaki Valley wine region is centered around Kurow with plots of vines nestled around the fringes of town and lower Lake Aviemore. The local producers specialist in cool climate varieties and there are a number of producers, boutique labels and cellar doors for you sample these distinct Waitaki wines.
While in Kurow, don't forget to pop into Kurow Museum and Information Centre for some expert local knowledge. Take some time to look through the museum which provides great insights into local history with a special acknowledgement of local All Blacks legend Richie McCaw.
If you're into walking, get those legs pumping up Kurow Hill for amazing views of the beautiful, braided Waitaki River. If you prefer a gentler stroll, take a pleasant saunter through the Kurow Wetlands and around Kurow Island. Another great local walk is the Deep Stream Track located across the other side of Aviemore Dam around 10 minutes from Kurow. Or carry on with your Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail adventure as you follow the Waitaki River from Kurow down to Duntroon.
