Omarama

Omarama – the place of light – is the perfect place to visit and stay if you're driving from Oamaru, Christchurch or Queenstown. It's also a great place to stop and rest after cycling from Ohau on the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail.

Recharge the batteries and have a relaxing soak in the Omarama Hot Tubs with amazing views day or night.

Learn about New Zealand's wool industry and our high-country farming at the Wrinkly Rams. Watch the sheep shearing show and the sheepdog demonstration before feeding the pet lambs and/or sheep (depending on the time of year). This is also a popular cafe and restaurant with great coffee, a fantastic menu and wide selection of cabinet food.

Omarama also internationally recognised as a world-class area for gliding. Let Glide Omarama take you on an unforgettable aerial adventure with an introductory scenic flight. You'll be in awe soaring over the stunning, rugged high-country, bright blue waters and snow-capped mountain of the Mackenzie and Waitaki Districts.

The Ahuriri River is also a popular spot for fly-fishing and picnicking while the nearby Lake Benmore offers better opportunities for boaties to get out on the water.

Don't miss the Clay Cliffs, just north of Omarama. This wonderfully unique geological site can be found just out of Omarama and is signposted from State Highway 85. Like something straight out of a western movie, you'll feel a little small and humbled as you wander between the sharp, towering pinnacles and ridges which are separated by steep ravines.
