If you spend any time around Ōamaru historic township, you’ll eventually hear it — the low, rhythmic chuff of a vintage locomotive easing down the line, a sound kept alive largely thanks to the dedication of rail enthusiast Harry Andrew.
For decades, Harry has been the quiet force behind the scenes, coaxing century‑old machinery back to life, coordinating volunteers, and keeping the Sunday trains running through the Victorian Precinct and out toward the harbour. He’s also been working on a book, celebrating the last few decades of Ōamaru Steam and Rail, which is set to be published in May.
The line itself offers a fascinating glimpse into Ōamaru’s past, threading past some of the town’s oldest buildings and, now, practically right to the doorstep of Ōamaru’s little blue penguins.
“It’s been a long time in the making,” says Harry.
“For many years, a personal dream of mine has been to collaborate with the Ōamaru Penguins and create a journey that combines the best of what Ōamaru has to offer.”
Harry says the goal is to create an experience that feels seamless: a gentle journey by rail through the historic precinct, followed by an encounter with the smallest penguins in the world.
Presenting: The Sunday Train and Discovery Centre Experience.
Begin your journey by hopping aboard a heritage train at 11am or 11.45am from Itchen Street Station in Ōamaru. Stop off at Quarry Siding, then stroll to the Ōamaru Penguins Discovery Centre. Explore interactive exhibits, learn about penguin behaviours, and see where penguins care for their eggs and chicks.
After learning about the kororā (little blue penguins) and the colony’s conservation efforts, sneak a peek at nesting penguins and sunbathing seals as you follow the path through the colony that doesn’t disrupt our feathered friends.
Walk back through the Historic Precinct, grab a coffee or a late lunch, then head up the valley or down the coast for more nature and wildlife.
It’s an accessible option for families, day‑trippers, and visitors passing through, making it easier than ever to enjoy the town’s character, history, and natural environment.
Tickets: Purchase your Sunday Train experience at the train station, followed by access to the Discovery Centre when you arrive.
