The Waitaki Arts Festival 2023 features an exciting programme of visual, performing, and literary arts from local artists to international performers throughout October.

The feature show is international urban circus act 360 ALLSTARS, celebrating its 10-year anniversary world tour. Think acrobatics, BMX, basketball, drumming and a supercharged performance that’s described as a spectacular fusion of artistry that emerges from street culture.

The festival begins with the Burns Memorial Art Exhibition showcasing student artwork from 2 September to 29 October.

Another highlight is the Meet the Maker Creative Waitaki studio tour of artists, photographers, and crafters over Labour weekend. Take a creative adventure and along the way sample the awesome cafes and eateries for delicious food and or your coffee fix.

For the full Waitaki Arts Festival programme and event details see Ōamaru Opera House.

While you’re immersed in art, ensure that you visit the galleries and shops in the heart of the Victorian precinct on Harbour St.

Grainstore Gallery is the emporium and creative studio space of local artist Donna Demente and features whimsical art pieces that show her interest in the pre-Raphaelite era.

Another unique space is Buggyrobot Gallery, with Martin Horspool’s metal art and watercolour illustrations. Upcycling items from scrap yards to antique stores, Martin creates characters from the machines and devices of yesteryear.

The Waitaki Whitestone Geopark Festival is also happening in October, from the 27th to 29th. The festival will celebrate the accreditation of Waitaki Whitestone as New Zealand’s first UNESCO Global Geopark. Catch the geological marvels, festival events and activities during the long weekend. Along with the festival there’s lots to see in the Geopark .

Take a trip to the Takiroa Māori Rock Art site. It’s a significant landmark in the traditions of Ngāi Tahu Whānui and tells the story of our Māori forefathers who navigated the length of the Waitaki River and sheltered under limestone cliffs.

The Waitaki district’s geological sites tells us about the area that was once located under an ancient sea. Learn about the history at Duntroon’s Vanished World Centre where you’ll see the fossils of pre-historic creatures and the detail of the district’s interesting rock formations.
