It’s time to put the petal to the metal! Head out to Topflite’s sunflowers while the fields are still in full bloom—harvesting will begin in March. The vivid flowers are planted in a different location every year to avoid build up of diseases in the soil, and this time they can be found on route to Weston, right beside the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail.
The sunflowers always attract a lot of visitors, which isn’t a surprise to owners Peter and Sandra Mitchell. “They’re very photogenic!”
Get your lunch to go, because this is the best time to see the sunflowers facing forwards. Just like holiday-goers they track the sun. Who doesn’t love the feeling of warmth on their face and the wind in their flowers?
However, photographers do need to take note when venturing out to the Trail to get a shot, “Watch out the electric fence is on!” Peter said. “And please be sure to park in a safe manner…not on the road or blocking machinery access to gateways.”
Originally grown in the 1970s for the purpose of making sunflower oil this all changed as, “the birdfeed market opportunity was discovered. The best thing about these flowers is growing a seed that’s packed full of nutrition for New Zealand’s birds!”
Gazing at acres upon acres of golden flowers makes our slow-to-start Summer finally feel real. So, pose up a storm (outside the field, let’s be respectful sunflower lovers). Even if you don’t like your photo being taken, check them out, we’re guessing these sunflowers will grow on you!
The field is located just out of Weston, along Weston-Ngapara Rd
