The annual Steampunk NZ Festival is just around the corner, and if you’re visiting the region for King’s Birthday weekend, it’s the perfect opportunity to experience all the wonders of Waitaki.
Here’s how to make the most of your visit, with some action-packed itineraries and activity ideas for the whole family to enjoy this long weekend.
Check into your accommodation in the heart of Ōamaru, or if you’re coming from Dunedin, have a look at the Extended Victorian which will transport you to Ōamaru train station, just a 10-minute walk from the Victorian Precinct.
Make your way to the corner of Itchen and Tees Street by Cucina (after a morning coffee at Tees Street perhaps) and dive into the spirit of Steampunk with an op shop tour. These local treasure troves are perfect for finding unique pieces to complete your festival outfits.
In the evening, kick off the festivities with the Early Bird Meet & Greet. This is a fantastic opportunity to mingle with fellow steampunk enthusiasts or meet some new friends.
You’re hungry after an action-packed day one, so take a leisurely stroll around Ōamaru, visiting local cafes for breakfast. Don’t miss the historic Victorian Precinct with its beautifully preserved buildings and shops to satisfy the shopper in you or your group.
Grab a drink and a bite to eat in town before attending the Steampunk grand opening ceremony at 6pm sharp!
Start your day at the Steampunk Market and browse through a variety of stalls offering steampunk attire, accessories, and gadgets. For some outfit inspiration, don’t miss the street parade and fashion showcase.
Then pay a visit to the Waitaki Arts Trail info hub in the Victorian Precinct to find out how you can explore some amazing artwork all weekend long. The entrance will have red balloons so you can’t miss it!
Take a quick trip to Duntroon for a history lesson, then finish at one of the many amazing restaurants the region has to offer for a well-deserved dinner and drink.
After strolling the Ōamaru Farmers Market for a bite to eat, have a go at Teapot Racing or watch the races unfold. This quirky event is a festival highlight.
Then in the evening, visit the Ōamaru Blue Penguin Colony to watch Ōamaru’s cutest residents arrive back to shore from a days’ fishing.
You’re feeling the activities catching up on you, so it’s time to wind down before heading home. Check out some of our incredible wellness options here.
There’s something for everyone – from luxurious accommodation options, relaxing spa treatments, local culinary delights, or peaceful nature walks.
Whether you’re a veteran or novice, the Steampunk NZ Festival offers a unique and unmissable experience. Enjoy your visit to Ōamaru and the wider Waitaki region, filled with good people, good food, and a trip to remember.
