Autumn golden tones in the Waitaki

Here in the Waitaki District, where the staggering landscapes stretch from Flag Swamp almost to the foot of Aoraki Mount Cook, there are plenty of opportunities for red leaf hunters to see the changing colours of Autumn.

Be quick to view the impressive autumn foliage, it’ll be winter before you know it!

Our favourite autumnal highlights include:

Sailors Cutting, a popular boating, fishing, and camping destination, is a great place to see the green of summer giving way to red and orange hues.

Benmore Dam is not only the largest earthen dam in the country but also a great spot for all your Autumn shoot!

The tracks and trails that make up the Ōtematata Wetlands were restored to their natural beauty thanks to thousands of hours of volunteer work—and look amazing in the autumn.

Pumpkin Point

With the kaleidoscopic change this area goes through during the colder months, the autumn leaves in full splendour will make you feel like you’re in another world.

Here’s a lesser known highlight: behind Kurow vineyard at this time of year, you will find a gauntlet of scarlet and gold poplars. This intimate tunnel is a must do as the autumn colours are particularly beautiful here.
