Escape the 21st century and immerse yourself in the charm of Ōamaru’s Victorian Precinct before exploring the abundance of rich history Waitaki has to...
Just a 35-minute drive from Ōamaru, Duntroon is home to a variety of natural, historical, and cultural attractions with geological features unlike anywhere else.
Begin your adventure at the Vanished World Centre and learn about our local geology. Dig for fossils and discover ancient creatures that used to call Waitaki home, such as shark tooth dolphins and penguins which stood 1.3m high.
Explore a bit further out from Duntroon and you will be rewarded with ancient Māori rock art, Elephant Rocks, and Anatini where an ancient Baleen Fossil is preserved within the prehistoric rock walls.
For some ‘modern’ history, check out Duntroon’s old gaol (jail) and Nicol’s Blacksmith, before wandering through the Duntroon Wetlands, where hard-working volunteers have created a lovely network of pathways that meander around natural springs and waterways.
