The Happy Glamper
Not your typical camper? Indulge in a bit of luxury and try one of the region’s unique glamping experiences instead. From geodesic domes, treehouses, ...
Explore Te Kohurau / Kurow, New Zealand’s hottest new viticulture region offering award-winning wines grown from limestone soil. Pump your adrenaline with a jetboat ride down the Waitaki River or enter tranquility on a walk among birdlife and wetlands – there's something for everyone in this quaint little town.
Whether you’re travelling through or staying overnight, the town boasts its fair share of scenery and culture, as well as being a gateway to the Waitaki Whitestone aspiring Geopark.
Formally a service town for those who came seeking their fortunes during the gold rush, Kurow became a base for building the Waitaki Dam and its man-made lake, Lake Waitaki. If you pass through Benmore, drive across the dam to see these hydroelectric projects still in action.
If cycling is more your scene, begin your Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail in Kurow. The off-road cycle trail starts at the eastern end of Kurow between the museum sheds. You can head west towards the Waitaki Dam and Ōtemātātā where beautiful views await your exciting cycle adventure.
Make sure to check out some impressive history at the Kurow Museum and Information Centre, open weekdays from 10am – 3pm, before heading along to the Kurow Hotel for a well-deserved meal. Bright blue and yellow, the hotel is a two-story tribute to the previous owners’ friendly feud of Speights versus DB beer.
If you need a panoramic view, stop at Grey Street and make the 45-minute climb up Kurow Hill walkway for 360-degree views of the Hakataramea Valley. Whether you catch it for the sunrise or sunset, start or end your day with a stunning view.
Need inspiration? Whether you’re a foodie, a luxury lover, or a wildlife wanderer, you'll find plenty to inspire you.
