Located 15 minutes from Ōamaru, Maheno is known for its Heritage New Zealand sites: the historic flour mill Clark’s Mill and Totara Estate. The original buildings have been restored to tell the stories of where the world’s meat exports began and gives a realistic glimpse into what life would have been like for farm workers during the 1800’s.

Kakanui is a charming ocean-side village that is as tranquil as it is beautiful. Campbell’s Bay, the main beach, is a surfer’s haven. Hector’s Dolphins will often be seen playing in the waves and can be spotted right along the Kakanui coastline. This beachside village is well-known for its rich and fertile soils with many market gardens in the local area. You’ll find a good selection of seasonal produce available for purchase on roadside stalls.

Local talk has it that Kakanui potatoes and tomatoes are among the best in the world.

Herbert is a small village surrounded by forest walks and mountain biking trails. There is also Glencoe Campsite – a lovely DOC managed space surrounded by bush with the river running below. The nearby Waianakarua River also offers lovely swimming and picnic spots.
