Explore Ōmārama, a town close to the Southern Alps and a crossroads between Queenstown, Twizel, and Waitaki to the East.

Ōmārama is the te reo Māori name for ‘place of light’, and you will understand why when you look to the skies. The crystal-clear air is pure and the nights so black that the star-gazing opportunities here are a once-in-a-lifetime vision.

If you’re into seeing the world from a birds-eye view, you’ll be glad to know Ōmārama is the gliding capital of NZ. Both national and international gliding records have been achieved here, with the unique uplift and wind conditions attracting world-record keepers.

The great outdoors can be enjoyed by exploring, tramping, hunting, fishing, kayaking, and horse riding throughout the lush and rugged Ahuriri Conservation Park.

While in Ōmārama, the stark and striking landforms of the Paritea Clay Cliffs beckon. This is one of the many featured Geosites in the Waitaki Whitestone Geopark, which is the first UNESCO Geopark in New Zealand. From SH8 make your way along to Henburn Road. Once parked, there is a 15-minute walk before you’ll find yourself in awe, staring up at the Clay Cliffs.

As this Geosite was originally formed upon gravels, sands and silt in freshwater lakes and rivers, the sharp pinnacles and steep ravines are not suitable for those with mobility issues. Not to worry, as the Cliffs can be viewed from a distance and will look just as impressive near or far.

If you’re feeling weary after a long day’s drive, end your day in the eco-friendly Hot Tubs Ōmārama. Sit back, relax, and soak up those mountain views from a steaming tub.
