ELephant Rocks

Wander through the towering limestone rocks at Elephant Rocks. A geological wonder of the Waitaki, this unique landscape has featured in films such as Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Part of the Vanished World Trail, the Elephant Rocks are the weathered remnants of the Otekaike Limestone formation.

The formations vary from 1–10 metres (3–33 ft) across and are naturally scattered around a grass paddock on a gentle hillside over an area of about 200 metres
(660 ft) across.

The rocks themselves are rounded and others pockmarked from weathering. It has generally been accepted that they do not specifically resemble elephants, though you may find some if you look hard enough.

Access :

The rocks are on private land so visitors are asked to be respectful of all signage and roaming stock. Access is via a short 2-3 minute walk.
