Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail

About

NZ’s Longest Cycle Trail and Iconic Great Ride

The Alps 2 Ocean (A2O) Cycle Trail is New Zealand’s ultimate multi-day cycling experience. Stretching over 300km from the base of Aoraki/Mt Cook to the Pacific Ocean at Oamaru, this South Island cycle trail traverses the Waitaki Whitestone UNESCO Global Geopark and the Mackenzie Basin. Whether you are tackling the full 6–8 day journey or a scenic day trip, the A2O offers a world-class blend of alpine vistas, turquoise hydro lakes, and heritage charm.

Highlights of the Alps 2 Ocean Journey

  • The Helicopter Hop: Start your adventure with a breathtaking heli-flight over the Tasman River from Aoraki/Mt Cook Village.
  • Turquoise Glacial Lakes: Ride alongside the vivid blue waters of Lake Pukaki and Lake Ohau with the Southern Alps as your backdrop.
  • Geological Wonders: Pass through the Elephant Rocks and the Clay Cliffs, exploring the unique limestone landscapes of the Waitaki Valley.
  • Wine & Heritage: Finish your ride with a wine tasting in Kurow before pedalling into Oamaru’s Victorian Heritage Precinct.

A2O Trail Logistics & Difficulty

The trail is graded Level 2 (Easy) and Level 3 (Intermediate), making it suitable for anyone with a reasonable fitness level.

  • Best Time to Ride: Late spring to autumn (October to April) offers the most stable weather for cycling the South Island.
  • E-Bike Friendly: The entire trail is well-suited for e-bikes, with charging stations and bike-friendly accommodation throughout the Waitaki district.
  • Itinerary Planning: Most riders allow 5–7 days for the full "Alps to Ocean" experience, though local operators offer shuttle services for those wanting to ride shorter, highlights-only sections.
