About
A geological masterpiece located just outside of Ōmārama in the upper Waitaki Valley, the Clay Cliffs (Paritea) are a staggering display of nature’s power. These "badland" formations—a labyrinth of razor-sharp pinnacles and deep, narrow ravines—look more like a scene from a sci-fi movie than a classic New Zealand hillside.
The story of the cliffs began roughly 20 million years ago, when layers of silt and gravel were deposited by ancient lakes and rivers. Over time, the nearby active Ostler Fault pushed these layers upward and tilted them, while the relentless forces of rain and wind carved the soft sediment into the dramatic, fluted columns you see today.
Access
From the car park, a 10–15 minute walk leads you directly into the heart of the cliffs. Once inside, the scale of the towers becomes truly apparent.
Plan Your Visit
-
Location: Turn onto Quailburn Road off SH8 (near Ōmārama), then follow the unsealed Henburn Road to the gate.
-
Entry fee: The cliffs are located on private land. Access is granted via a $5 vehicle entry fee, payable at the gate (cash or bank transfer only).
- Difficulty: The trail is a short but steady climb. Because the terrain is uneven and consists of loose scree and gravel, it is not suitable for those with mobility issues.
-
Top Tip: The cliffs are particularly spectacular in the late afternoon sun when the orange and cream hues of the clay are at their most vibrant.
Know Before You Go
-
Footwear: The interior of the cliffs is rocky and can be slippery. Sturdy, closed-toe footwear is highly recommended.
-
Winter Travel: During winter months, the unsealed road and the track inside the cliffs can become rough and icy; take extra care when driving and walking.
-
Respect the Land: As this is private property, please stay on the marked tracks, obey all signage, and take all litter with you to help preserve this fragile geological wonder.
