About
Standing at just 30 centimetres (or 1ft), be captivated by our cutest little residents at the Ōamaru Blue Penguin Colony.
Watch the kororā (little penguins) in their natural environment from a special day viewing area or marvel as they waddle ashore after a day foraging at sea. You may also see a range of different wildlife in the area, such as fur seals and seabirds.
During your visit, learn about the important work the Colony is doing to support research and conservation. Enjoy the informative commentary of the expert guides and learn about the average life of blue penguins, their different breeding patterns, and why the conservation of these tiny birds is so important in New Zealand.
Since 1992 the Colony has made significant efforts to protect kororā and undertake research to learn more about their lives. Their efforts have seen the Colony grow from just 30 breeding pairs in the early 90s to now over 200.
The Colony has recently been awarded the Qualmark Gold, recognising it as world-class experience for tourists.
Your visit to the Ōamaru Blue Penguin Colony directly supports ongoing research and conservation.
