Herbert is a small village surrounded by forest walks and mountain biking trails. There is also Glencoe Campsite – a lovely DOC managed space surrounded by bush with the river running below.
Just south of Herbert, the oldest stone bridge still in use on a New Zealand highway is found at Waianakarua and a historic mill house still sits beside this bridge and these days provides a venue, dining and accommodation facilities while the nearby Waianakarua River offers lovely swimming and picnic spots.
The Swallows Circuit Track, Podocarp Loop and Full Loop all begin from the Reid Road carpark, while The Hoods Creek Track begins from the Breakneck Road gate.
