Park and begin riding at the Palmerston Sports Hall on Gilligan St. Go down Gilligan St, past the squash club – it’s a short down, up and down to Brough St. Turn left onto Brough St (gravel), veer left onto Taieri Peak Rd and carry on until the intersection with Boundary Rd where you’ll hang a right.
At the next intersection turn left onto Hughes Rd. The ride along Hughes Rd does require some effort but the reward is getting to Taieri Peak! Once the junction of Taieri Peak Rd and Hughes Rd is reached, you have a choice…
a) head back downhill toward Palmerston – turn left down Taieri Peak Rd > right onto Boundary Rd > left onto John St > left onto District Rd > left onto Gilligan St where you began
b) carry on Taieri Peak Rd until the actual peak and then return via a) above
Surface is mostly hard packed gravel, but watch for loose gravel at corners and take care if moving at speed. There are great views downhill – either looking straight across to Puketapu or to your left down the valley towards Dunback. All seasons present the area with strong colours and rolling hills.
